It was the scent of rain on pine trees that first told Elara she was home. As the bus rolled to a stop at the tiny station of Willowridge, her heart pounded against her ribcage with a mix of fear and hope. She found him by the lake, skipping stones across the water. “You came back,” he said, his voice soft with surprise.
“I never really left,” she whispered.

“I don’t know if I can stay,” she admitted after a while. “But I want to try.”
